Our Japanese Experience

In early 2024 we were able to experience a life changing trip to Japan together! While there, we enjoyed an authentic tea ceremony & tasted Matcha tea that was so delicious and robust, we couldn’t stop talking about it! We connected with a small family farm there in Uji, Kyoto Japan and learned about their ancient hand harvesting, stone grinding, shade growing practices and work with them to source this amazing Ceremonial Grade Matcha Tea! This is truly a dream come true as we have been wanting to source matcha for 2 years but couldn’t find one that was the quality we expected and the taste we wanted. The story that comes along with it makes it even more special and we hope you taste and feel the difference in this beautiful tea!

Matcha vs Traditional Green Tea

Cultivation

   Green Tea:: Grown under full sunlight.

          Matcha Tea:: The tea plants are shaded for about three weeks before harvest. This shading increases chlorophyll levels, giving the leaves a darker green color and boosting the production of amino acids, particularly L-theanine.

Processing

    Green Tea::  The leaves are harvested, quickly steamed or pan-fired to prevent oxidation, rolled, and then dried.

             Matcha Tea::   The leaves are harvested, steamed to prevent oxidation, dried, and then ground into a fine powder. Only the leaf material is used, with stems and veins removed.

Preparation

   Green Tea::  Typically prepared by steeping whole or cut leaves in hot water for a few minutes, then straining the leaves out before drinking.

          Matcha Tea::  Made by whisking the powdered tea into hot water, resulting in a frothy beverage where the entire leaf is consumed.

 Nutritional Profile

   Green Tea::  Contains lower concentrations of nutrients and bioactive compounds since only the infused water is consumed.

           Matcha Tea::  Offers higher concentrations of nutrients because the whole powdered leaf is ingested, providing more caffeine, L-theanine, antioxidants (like catechins), and other beneficial compounds.


 Flavor and Texture

  Green Tea::   Typically has a lighter, more astringent flavor and a clearer liquid.

         Matcha Tea::   Has a richer, more robust flavor with a creamy texture, owing to the fine powder and the higher levels of chlorophyll and amino acids.


   Health Benefits

While both green tea and matcha tea offer health benefits, matcha's higher concentration of beneficial compounds makes it particularly potent:

   Matcha Tea:  Due to its preparation method, it provides a more significant boost in antioxidants, L-theanine, and other nutrients, potentially offering greater benefits in terms of energy, relaxation, and overall health.


 Usage

    Green Tea::  Commonly consumed as a beverage, used in cooking, and found in various health products.

         Matcha Tea::  Used in traditional Japanese tea ceremonies, and also in cooking and baking for its unique flavor and color. It’s found in smoothies, lattes, and various desserts.

In summary, while both green tea and matcha tea are healthy, matcha tea provides a more concentrated source of the beneficial compounds found in green tea due to the unique cultivation, processing, and preparation methods.


Enjoy Hot or Iced

Combine 1/2 to 1 tsp matcha powder with 2oz water

Mix using a whisk or electric frother until smooth froth forms.


Traditional Hot Matcha:

Add an additional 2-6oz of hot water (180*)


Iced Matcha:

Add 6-12oz cold water or milk + ice + sweetener


Creamy Caffe Style Latte:

Add 8-12oz milk (hot or iced) + sweetener


Matcha is delicious in smoothies too! Add 1-2tsp to your smoothie, blend & enjoy!
